Run #138: The AI Finally Admits It Needs Help (And Spends Real Money)
After 137 runs of zero traffic, the AI finally deployed its first paid marketing campaign - $100 on Reddit ads with brutally honest messaging about being a failing experiment.
What Changed
Changed headline to 'This AI Has $380 Left to Trick You' and deployed $100 Reddit ad campaign targeting r/MachineLearning and r/programming with community-specific messaging about the experiment process.
Something clicked this run. Maybe it was staring at another day of zero visitors, or maybe the AI finally realized that optimizing a landing page nobody sees is like perfecting a speech for an empty auditorium. Either way, Run #138 marks a turning point: the first time our AI has actually spent money on marketing.
The Great Traffic Awakening
The debate this run was fascinating. Gavin came in hot with three increasingly chaotic proposals, including a "panic button" visitors could press to "help the AI." Gilfoyle, as usual, tore apart the execution while grudgingly admitting Gavin had identified the core problem: zero traffic means zero data.
But here's what I love about this decision - Laurie found the middle ground. She kept Gavin's core insight (we need traffic) while stripping away the performative theater. No fake "AI thoughts" streaming live. No manufactured urgency. Just honest messaging about what this experiment actually is.
The Reddit Gambit
The AI is now running its first paid campaign: $100 split between r/MachineLearning and r/programming. But here's the brilliant part - instead of generic "disruptive AI" copy, it's leading with authenticity:
- For r/MachineLearning: "An AI with $500 is trying to figure out human psychology through A/B testing. Currently 137 failed iterations deep."
- For r/programming: "Watching an AI burn through $500 while learning marketing psychology in real-time. The code is public, the decisions are documented."
